Teaching & Learning

In aspiring to offer a handcrafted education in a digital age, we aim to prepare each student with the academic skills and habits of thought that will serve them personally and as citizens.

The unique learning and teaching reform model known as Paideia informs everything we do at MVHS. It is the cornerstone that sets the MVHS experience apart. Paideia is a Greek word that means “training of the physical and mental faculties in such a way as to produce a broad, enlightened, mature outlook, harmoniously combined with maximum cultural development.” (Merriam Webster 2021).

The “Three Columns” represented in this graphic have been a part of the MVHS charter since the beginning and continue to be a central part of the educational structure. The faculty systematically implements the three columns of teaching and learning through unit planning templates, all school projects, and all school seminar discussions.

  • This teaching mode helps students acquire organized knowledge. It is what many people think of as conventional education; it is direct, lecture-format delivery of factual information.

  • This teaching mode helps students develop academic skills like reading, writing, speaking, listening, calculating, problem solving, and investigating. Teachers act as a coach guiding and supporting students’ development of curricular skills through supervised practice and application during project work.

  • This teaching mode enlarges students’ understanding of ideas and values. This occurs as a collaborative, intellectual conversation facilitated by open-ended questions about a text. The teacher’s primary role is to ask questions that help students think further about ideas under discussion.
